- Click Quizzes, Surveys, or Self Assessments on the navbar.
- Click Question Library from the tool navigation.
Use the Quizzes tool to take a quiz, review your quiz results, and see class statistics for a quiz.
The Quizzes tool enables you to create and manage points-measured assessments. As part of your quantifiable assessment procedures, you can use quizzes to help evaluate users' learning progress and learning outcomes. Create and manage quiz questions from the Question Library or the Quizzes tool, and organize quizzes into categories to make it easier to find assessments with similar or related content. Use the quiz preview option to test the accuracy of content and grading before you release a quiz. In a preview, you can answer the questions, view allowed hints, submit the quiz, auto-grade answers, read feedback, and view report results.
Once you receive completed quizzes from learners, you can view quiz statistics such as grade distribution, grade average, question statistics, and user statistics on the Statistics page.
NoteWe recommend you click the corresponding Save button after answering a question. You can also click Save All Responses if you are not finished answering all questions on a single page, or if you are working on a time-consuming question and need to save all previous responses.
NoteIf you try to submit a quiz with unanswered questions, you will see a warning at the top of the Submit Quiz page informing you about unanswered questions. Click each link beneath the warning to return to each unanswered question.
If your quiz has a time-limit you may be prompted or forced to submit your quiz. If the quiz is set to auto-submit, at the end of the designated time period only saved questions submit.
Note Although you can start a quiz and navigate away from it at any time during the attempt, the timer for the quiz does not pause and continues to record your Time Taken.
On the Quiz List page, click Submissions from the context menu of the quiz you want to view. View your quiz score on the Quiz Submissions page. If learning objectives are associated with your quiz submission, they also display here.
Note Grades and statistical information are not available until they are released.
On the Quiz Submissions page, click Add to ePortfolio if you want to include the quiz's results as an artifact in your ePortfolio.
NoteIf you make multiple attempts on a quiz, all quiz scores display in the artifact.
On the Manage Quizzes page, click Grade from the context menu of the quiz you want to grade. You can grade by Attempts or by Questions (item analysis). Select the grade option you want from the appropriate tab.
Click Display Options and select the appropriate check boxes to modify the following:
The following displays at the top of a quiz result:
While grading a quiz, click the Questions tab to view quiz responses by question. Before you click on a question, there are two options available to view question responses: Grade Individual Responses and Update All Attempts.
Grade Individual Responses enables you to grade a quiz one question at a time. This means you can grade and leave feedback for all responses to each question before moving onto the next question. There are two additional options available in this view:
Blind Marking Student information does not appear alongside responses and responses display in a shuffled order. This aids in preventing unintentional bias during marking.
View Graded Responses Previously-graded responses appear as part of the response queue.
Update All Attempts enables you to view question statistics, make grading changes, and leave feedback for all responses to the selected question.
Question statistics display a percentage breakdown of how users responded to the question and the date of the most recent response. Other information that displays in the question statistics includes the quiz version, question text and options, and number of responses for each option.
Below the question statistics, there are options to modify the grade for all responses to the current question. Use Grading Type to override grades for all users at once, instead of individually updating each quiz attempt. The following options are available for the Grading Type:
Give to all attempts Allows you to award points to all users who received the current question on their quiz. Type the desired point value in the text field.
Give to attempts with answer (#) Allows you to award points for a specific response. This is useful if a question was incorrectly set up when the quiz was created. For example, if students who complete the quiz receive a grade value of 0 when they really should receive a grade value of 1, you can use this option to award them the appropriate grade value.
Note Any changes made to the grading of a quiz question record in the Modifications Log. The log documents the date, time, username, and action taken for each change to quiz grading.
Question types available to the Quizzes tool are similar to the questions available in the Self Assessments and Surveys tools (except Likert questions). Quizzes can contain the following question types:
You can also create the following information items:
See Creating bonus quiz questions [19] for information about creating bonus quiz questions.
TipAs a best practice, we recommend that you create all quiz questions within the Question Library [46]. This enables you to reuse questions in various quizzes, surveys, and self assessments.
All quiz question types allow you to include Feedback and Hints. Feedback enables you to provide added information as a basis for improving content comprehension. Hints are useful for suggesting how to approach a question.
You can provide feedback comments at the end of a question such as what details instructors are looking for in an ideal response.
Creating a quiz involves a series of steps. After you name a quiz, you can access its tab menus to define its general properties, restrictions, assessment, objectives, submission views, and reports setup.
When you create and name your quiz, you can add it to a category, associate it with a grade item, attach rubric criteria, and allow users to include it in their ePortfolio. The following options are available in general properties:
Category Group your quiz under an existing category or create a new category. Categories are useful for organizing quizzes with similar or related content.
Click Add/Edit Questions to create quiz questions.
Select quiz questions from the Quiz Layout area to preview a question. You can click Edit Values to modify points value, difficulty level, bonus questions, and mandatory questions. Click Add/Edit Questions to create new questions, sections, information, and to manage other question properties.
NoteYou can edit values and preview questions through Add/Edit Questions.
Once you add questions to your quiz, you can enter a value in the Questions per page field to indicate how many questions to display per page. Limiting the amount of questions available at a time is less overwhelming than placing an entire quiz on one page. You can also choose to prevent users from moving backwards through pages once they have left a page of questions.
The following options are available in optional advanced properties:
Hints Allows users to access hints to questions.
Notification Email The email address or comma-separated list of email addresses specified in this field receive a message each time a user completes a quiz attempt.
Disable Right-Click (Ctrl-click on a Mac) prohibits users from printing quiz questions by right-clicking on a question when taking a quiz.
NoteThis option is not compatible with Macs when using Internet Explorer or Safari.
Disable Page Access Users cannot access the Pager tool if they have a quiz attempt in progress.
Change description and introduction visibility by selecting on or off.
Description Create a description for a quiz that is not yet available to users.
Introduction Display a message to users at the start of a quiz. This will display at the top of a quiz before the first question.
Add information or instructions to the top or bottom of the quiz page. Change page header and footer visibility by selecting on or off.
Changing your quiz status to Active allows users to see and take the quiz. You can specify a date range that your quiz becomes available to users. You can also add quizzes associated with a date to your course calendar.
Create new, or attach existing release conditions if you want a quiz to be available to users only after they fulfill other specified tasks. Examples of release conditions include completing a dropbox submission; scoring a specified grade in a particular quiz; completing a survey; and being enrolled in a particular section. You can edit and change release conditions by clicking the Remove icon or Remove All Conditions.
If your organization purchases the Respondus LockDown Browser you will see two additional options on the Restrictions tab:
If you select one or both of these options, users will see a Download Respondus LockDown Browser link when they try to navigate to locked pages. Users can click the link to download a free copy of the browser.
Password To access a quiz, users must enter the same password you input here.
IP Restriction Users can only access a quiz from the IP address you specify here. Leave fields blank to allow multiple IP address access points.
Time Limit Enter a time limit for your quiz and select to enforce time and show clock. 120 minutes is the default time limit.
Grace Period Enter a grace period to allow users to submit their quiz without a late flag after the quiz time limit expires.
Late Submissions Select a penalty type for late submissions. You can select to have a late flag and no points deduction with Allow normal submission, set Late Limit minutes to give users a late grace period before receiving an auto-grade of 0, or select Auto-Submit Attempt to have the system automatically prompt users to submit their quiz attempt and block them from saving further progress after the specified time limit and grace period expire.
You can search and assign specific users a different set of quiz availability dates and late submission properties. Special access properties enable you to increase the time limit for special-needs users and allow different start and end dates for individual users.
Click Add Users to Special Access to create special access to a quiz. After you finish modifying special access properties and users permissions, click Add Special Access. When you return to the Advanced Availability section of the Restrictions tab, you can select Allow only users with special access to see this quiz to prevent other users from accessing the survey.
Grade ItemWhen associated with a quiz, you have the option to auto export quiz results to the Grades tool.
Auto Export to GradesThe system can send auto-graded attempt scores directly to the grade book if a quiz is associated with a grade item.
Student View PreviewIf you associate the quiz with a grade item, you can click Edit Display Settings from the Student View Preview context menu to edit how grades display to students.
Rubrics Add a rubric to a quiz if you want to evaluate users with a predefined set of criteria. You can associate a rubric with a quiz to demonstrate fair and consistent evaluation.
Automatic Grade Users can see quiz grade immediately after completion and submission.
Note The ability to display an automatic grade is limited by questions that cannot be auto-graded.
ePortfolio Artifacts Users can add the submission view of a quiz as an artifact to their ePortfolio.
You can allow users one or more quiz attempts and calculate a grade based on their highest attempt, lowest attempt, first attempt, last attempt, or average of all attempts.
Enter a maximum or minimum percentage achievement requirement for each quiz attempt to restrict access and determine qualification for another attempt.
Associate a quiz with a set of learning objectives and a competency that you want users to master. See Associating quizzes with learning objectives [16] for more information.
A default quiz submission view will appear to users after each quiz attempt submission.
You can edit the default view or create and select a customized view.
View PropertiesName your view and enter a message that will display to users after each submission.
View RestrictionsSet a date and time to determine when users will see the submission view. By default, users will see the submission view immediately after a quiz submission. Select the IP Restriction check box to determine where users are allowed to view their quiz submissions. IP address restrictions reflect the same IP restrictions set in the Restrictions tab's Optional Advanced Restrictions. You can edit the default view or create and select a customized view. You can also choose to display a submission view after users complete a specified quiz attempt and/or achieve a required score. You can select the Limited Duration check box and enter a time in minutes to indicate how long users can view a quiz submission.
View DetailsYou can customize and display questions, responses, question answers, scores, and statistics to users in the submission view.
Use quiz reports to gather information on user performance. Quiz reports are different from quiz statistics; they collect and present more types of information than is available through statistics. Choose a report type to display question statistics, question details, users statistics, attempt details, or user attempts. You can also select a release date and choose which roles have permission to view each report.
Create quiz sections to organize your questions into folders. You can do this in the Question Library or while creating a quiz. Both of these areas are identical in functionality: one creates folders within the Question Library, while the other creates folders within a quiz.
You can also import sections from the Question Library directly into a quiz, survey, or self assessment. Importing a section transfers the section folder and any properties associated with the section (section name, messages, images, or feedback). You can still import all of the questions within a section separate from the section itself by creating the section within a quiz and clicking Add/Edit Questions.
NoteAlthough you can create subsections within sections, we recommend you keep question organization simple and intuitive.
NoteManaging quiz sections (renaming, reordering, publishing, deleting) is similar to managing quiz questions.
Manage multiple quizzes at the same time. You can edit common properties such as name, category, active status, and number of attempts allowed.
A copied quiz contains all of the questions from the original quiz. Copying is a quick and simple way to create a quiz that assesses prior and current understanding of course materials.
NoteYou can only copy quizzes within the same course.
The quiz preview option allows you to test the accuracy of content and grading before you release a quiz. In a preview, you can answer the questions, view allowed hints, submit the quiz, auto-grade answers, read feedback, and view report results.
Change the order of quizzes in the Quiz List page. Quizzes reorder within their respective categories if more than one category exists.
Note To reorder categories, see Creating and managing quiz categories [15].
You can organize quizzes into categories to make it easier to find assessments with similar or related content. Create, edit, reorder, and delete multiple categories at the same time.
Change the order of categories that display on the Quizzes List page.
NoteQuizzes under "Without Category" will always be at the top of the list.
There are two methods of associating a quiz with learning objectives:
Use the Objectives tab to associate a quiz with a learning objective. By associating a quiz with a learning objective, you can tie the assignment to a competency you want your users to master. This association can be a basic association or an association with a rubric-based assessment.
See Competencies' Creating activities [47] for information on the levels of association.
If you have permissions to edit a quiz's associated learning objectives and assessments, click Edit Learning Objective or Edit Assessment from the context menu of the learning objective or assessment you want to modify.
In cases where only a subset of quiz questions are relevant to a learning objective, you can align specific groups of quiz questions to learning objectives from the quiz’s Objectives tab. The questions must be together in a section. If you need to, see Creating quiz sections [9].
In addition, you can use a new learning objective assessment method for quizzes called “Score on selected questions”. It’s the numeric score of all questions in the quiz aligned to the learning objective.
When you allow multiple quiz attempts and you associate a selection of quizzes to a learning objective, whether the user achieves the learning objective depends on what you set using Overall Grade Calculation in the Attempts section of the Assessment tab.
Although the quiz uses these criteria as the basis for choosing the quiz score, the objective-based assessment uses this method to also calculate the scope on the questions you selected to assess performance for an objective.
Highest Attempt is not based on the highest score of the quiz attempts, but on the highest score achieved for the set of questions associated with the learning objective over all attempts for that user. This might be on a different attempt than the one used to determine the highest quiz score.
Lowest Attempt is not based on the lowest score of the quiz attempts, but on the lowest score achieved for the set of questions associated with the learning objective over all attempts for that user. This might be on a different attempt than the one used to determine the lowest quiz score.
First Attempt is based on the score for the selection of questions associated with the learning objective on users' first attempt. The score of the quiz is also be based on users' first attempt.
Last Attempt is based on the score for the selection of questions associated with the learning objective on users' last attempt. The score of the quiz is also be based on users' last attempt.
Average of all attempts is based on the average of the scores for those selected questions for all the attempts made.

Create random sections in quizzes to distribute a unique set of questions to individual users. Random sections pull questions from a designated pool of questions stored in the Question Library. Specify how many questions users receive from the random section question pool after you import questions from the Question Library into the random section folder.
Since you can only access random sections within quizzes, you must create a quiz before you can create its random sections. You can import an infinite number of questions from the Question Library into each random section, but you cannot create new questions within random section folders.
NoteAll questions within a random section are assigned the same points value.
NoteManaging random sections (renaming, reordering, deleting) is similar to managing quiz questions except you cannot publish random sections.
NoteThe bonus value is equal to the points value assigned to the quiz question.
The Question In Use page displays when you save changes to a shared question or information item. You can select the check box beside each quiz, self assessment, survey, and the Question Library in which you want to apply your current changes and click Save.
The preview page allows you to view the appearance of an individual question, as well as the comments and hints you might include with the question. If the quiz question appears in more than one place, the preview page also displays a list of places the question is in use (for example, Question Library, quizzes, surveys, self assessments).
Change the order of questions displayed in a quiz by reordering them in the quiz question list.
You can import quiz questions from numerous sources. Questions can come from an existing collection of questions (quizzes, surveys, self assessments, and the Question Library), a CSV file, or a learning object repository.
You can import quiz questions from existing collections of questions within Quizzes, Surveys, Self Assessments, and the Question Library.
You can create quiz questions offline using a CSV formatted text file. Follow the steps below to access a template for creating the text file, or upload a question file you have completed.
NoteAssociating a creative commons license automatically populates the metadata rights fields with this information.
Respondus is a software application commonly used to create questions offline. When using this software to import your questions into Learning Environment, the following tips might be of use:
If a user starts a quiz but does not submit the attempt, the quiz displays as "in progress" on the Grade Quiz page, and the Enter Quiz as User icon appears beside the attempt. If you want to submit the quiz for the user:
Note The option to impersonate a user and submit the user's quiz is not available if your organization turns on User Privacy.
View and export quiz statistics and reports to a CSV file for data analysis. The CSV file contains all pertinent information on the quiz so that you can query, sort, and evaluate the data without being connected to the learning management system. In this view, you can see a list of quizzes for the course. The average grade for each quiz displays beside the quiz name.
NoteThe system will export the statistics only from the tab you are currently viewing.
User Stats CSV files contain performance data by user, including the user’s Org Defined ID, username, first name, last name, quiz score, the value the quiz was graded out of, the user’s score as a percentage, and the class average.
TipCreate a column to calculate the median score on the quiz to consider the class’s performance from a different perspective. Use the formula <=median(x1:x5)> to calculate the median.
Question Stats CSV files contain data about the average score on questions by points and percentage.
The question title, text, bonus status, and difficulty level are included in the CSV file so that data can be analyzed without referring back to the learning management system.
TipYou can sort, query, hide, and delete data to help your analysis and create charts or graphs to visually represent trends.
Question Details CSV files contain detailed information about each question in the quiz, including a list of all of the answers provided for each quiz attempt, how many users chose each possible answer, the total number of responses, and the average score on the question. Question Details reports can help you evaluate trends in answers and look for questions that were unclear or difficult for a number of users.
The question title, text, bonus status, and difficulty level are included in the CSV file so that data can be analyzed without referring back to the learning management system.
TipCreate a column that calculates the average score for all question attempts as a percentage by dividing the Average Score column by the Out Of column and multiplying by 100. Next, create a custom filter for the new Attempt Average column that displays only rows where the attempt average is less than 51%. This way you can quickly review questions that users struggle with and adjust grades or your lesson plans accordingly.
